OUR CORE BELIEFS

What we believe at City Gate Church about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church

"In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity (love)." ~Rupert Meldenius

There will always be peripheral doctrines upon which Biblically rooted and committed Christ followers disagree, and we welcome dialogue on many issues related to Christian doctrine. However, we recognize the importance of having a framework around which we grow in maturity and relate to one another as a community of believers, and we hold the following essentials to be at the core of who we are and what we believe:

The Essentials

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is at the center of everything we are. We believe that Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only one who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life. We believe that Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

THE TRINITY

We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy.

The bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word. It is accurate, authoritative, and applicable to our everyday lives.

THE SEPARATION

We believe that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.

THE RECONCILIATION

We believe that in order to receive forgiveness and a fresh start with God, we must repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and commit to His will for our lives.

the holy spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is given to every follower of Christ to guide, comfort, convict, and adopt us into the family of God. He helps us grow into Christ-likeness by producing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, and He gives us spiritual gifts to empower us to meet the needs of God's people and a hurting world.

baptism

We believe that in order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptised in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

life with christ

We believe that God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives which is to worship God, fulfil our role in the Church, and serve the community in which we live.

THE CHURCH

We believe in the power and significance of the Church and the necessity of believers to meet regularly together for community, prayer, worship, serving, and communion.

eternity

We believe that our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ.

the return

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

Other beliefs we value

healing AND wholeness

We believe that God wants to heal and transform our spirit, soul, and body; so that we can live healthy and blessed lives in order to help others more effectively.

SIGNS, WONDERS, AND MIRACLES

We believe God still performs signs, wonders, and miracles today as He did in Scriptures.

EQUALITY OF MEN AND WOMEN in church and life

We believe God created men and women equally in His image. We will not discriminate against women (or men) in any capacity. We think the Church should be one of the biggest champions of the call of God on people's lives. God uses men and women equally and sometimes distinctly, and we celebrate our unique differences. It's our passion to build strong men and women and boys and girls; with a heart to always partner together to enlarge the Kingdom of God.

every generation is vital

We believe each generation is responsible for being a bridge from the previous generation to the one following. Babies, children, and students will always hold a precious place in our heart and ministry because they are our treasure and legacy. We are responsible for proclaiming the goodness of God to the next generation and those yet to be born. Young adults, the working force, and those raising families are the strength of the church. We cherish and honor those who are older and are encouraged by their example, instruction and testimony. We believe in generations working together, worshipping together, and enjoying life together.

fivefold leadership & ministry

The Early Church had men and women apostles, pastors, teachers, prophets, and evangelists; and we believe the church today should not look different. Every successful team has coaches and players, they each have their role, and one cannot win without the other. Fivefold leadership and the church ministering together is how we win. Our heart is to help people know who they are in Christ, discover their purpose and calling, grow in their anointing, and serve together to become more like Jesus.

Ephesians 4:11-13 says, "And Christ has appointed some with grace to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Their calling and responsibility is to nurture and equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. These grace ministries will function until we all come to such unity in our faith, until we all experience the fullness of what it means to know the Son of God, and finally we become like Christ with the full dimensions of spiritual maturity."
